New proposed football district would have Russell County heading east

The new draft proposal for high school football districts in Kentucky next year includes major changes for Russell County.

Under the proposal, Russell County would remain in Class 4A but would now be in a 5-team district that includes Corbin, Harlan County, Wayne County and Whitley County.

Russell County currently is in a 4-team district with Wayne County, Boyle County, and Lincoln County.

If approved, the new alignment will take place beginning with the 2027 season.

The KHSAA Board of Control is expected to take up the issue next month.
