Stephens’ Chunk of Gold wins West Virginia Derby

Chunk of Gold, the horse owned by local businessman Terry Stephens, took home first place in the West Virginia Derby yesterday.

Chunk of Gold entered the race as the second-favorite at 2-1 odds in the field of eight horses, but led from start to finish. Ultimately, Chunk of Gold won the race by four-and-a-quarter lengths.

It’s the second win for the horse in its seven-race career and comes on the heels of a second-place finish in the Ohio Derby in June and a 9th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby back in May.

Chunk of Gold is trained by Ethan West, the brother of Aaron West of West Thoroughbreds.
