The Russell County Fiscal Court met this morning, and magistrates discussed the new state law permitting side-by-sides and certain other ATVs to be street-legal.
The fiscal court passed a motion to allow County Attorney Kevin Shearer to draft an ordinance that would allow side-by-sides on county roadways.
The magistrates voted to draft an ordinance that would allow side-by-sides and other special-purpose vehicles that fall under the guidelines to be operated on all county roadways.
The vote passed by a 4-1 margin with Magistrate Steve Richardson voting in opposition.
Sheriff Derek Polston told the court that deputies have already pulled over multiple individuals operating side-by-sides on county roadways. Polston added the sheriff’s office has inspected 4 side-by-sides.
A first reading of the ordinance will likely take place at next month’s meeting. A first reading must be held before a second reading and vote can take place.
