The Jamestown City Council voted to permit alcohol sales at the annual Lakefest celebration at last night’s council meeting.
Following a lengthy discussion of the issue, the council voted by a 3-2 margin to approve alcohol sales at the festival.
Council members William Murray, Tony Wright, and Mitchell Marcum voted in favor of permitting alcohol sales. Council members Barry Coffey and Gail Robertson voted in opposition. Councilman Dwight Richards was absent from the meeting.
Mayor Regena Hinton said only a couple vendors selling alcohol will be permitted and certain regulations will have to be followed.
The council discussed a system in which people planning to purchase alcohol at Lakefest will have to purchase and wear a particular bracelet.
It was also noted in the motion that alcohol vendors will only be able to provide beverages in cups. No alcoholic beverages in cans or bottles will be permitted.
Logistical details will continue to be worked out by festival organizers over the next several days leading up to the event.
