The Russell County High School Laker Baseball team defeated Metcalfe County in a district matchup last night by a score of 2-1.
The Lakers were led by the pitching duo of Ayden McGowan and Blane Melton. McGowan got the start, giving up just one run on 3 hits and striking out 7 batters in 4 2/3 innings of work. Melton entered in relief, pitching 2 1/3 innings and giving up no hits and no runs, while striking out 6 batters.
At the plate, Carter Stapp and Jack Shearer each drove in a run for the Lakers.
The Lakers will return to action later this week in Myrtle Beach for the Cal Ripken Experience.
The middle school Laker Baseball team fell in a low-scoring battle to Mercer County by a score of 1-0, as Mercer scored in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the 7th to get the win.
Russell County fell despite Mercer County not recording a hit in the game. The Lakers finished with 3 errors, including on the final play.
Raylan McAninch, Keaton Garner, Aaron McGowan, and Aidan Huckaby each finished with hits. Garner pitched 4 innings, giving up no hits and no runs and striking out 3. Brumley entered in relief, pitching 2 2/3 innings while striking out 4.
