Student pickup at RSES causes traffic, safety issues

Parents and guardians lining up to pick up students from Russell Springs Elementary School in the afternoon is causing traffic and safety issues along the highway.

The issue was brought up at a recent board of education meeting, as board members pointed out that people are parking on the side of North 127 near the school up to two hours before the designated pickup time. Cars sitting in the emergency lane for that amount of time can create safety issues, according to board members and the school district’s safety director, Jackie Grider.

The school district does not allow parents or guardians to enter the school property until 15 minutes or so before pickup time. The school district cites safety concerns about allowing people onto the school campus, and this is a common practice at schools across the state.

Russell Springs Police Chief Bryan Shepard will be the guest on Community Conversations on WJRS Monday to discuss what, if anything, Russell Springs Police can do regarding the issue. You can hear the interview live at 7:15 Monday morning.
