State Senator Rick Girdler, who represents Russell County along with Pulaski, Clinton, Cumberland, and Wayne counties, is hopeful his legislation that would require schools to offer a moment of silence at the beginning of the school day will become law.
Girdler is the sponsor of Senate Bill 19, which requires schools to offer this moment of silence at the beginning of school each day, and would last between 1 and 2 minutes.
Girdler spoke to WJRS News and said the bill is simple, and does not require students to pray.
A similar bill passed through the House of Representatives last year but did not receive a vote in the Senate.
The legislature will reconvene for part two of the session on February 4.
