Bill would lower age for driver’s permit to 15

A bill before the Kentucky legislature would lower the age requirement for a driver’s permit in the state of Kentucky to 15 years old.

The current requirement is a person must be at least 16 years old to receive a learner’s permit.

Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and West Virginia allow 15-year-olds to receive a learner’s permit and a person must be 15 years and 6 months in Ohio and Virginia to receive a learner’s permit.

Kentucky is one of just 9 states in which a person has to be 16 to receive a learner’s permit.

The bill is House Bill 15. It currently has 21 sponsors in the House of Representatives.

Legislators will return to session on February 4.
