State lawmakers considering school cell phone policy

State lawmakers are considering enacting a statewide policy for cell phones in schools.

Lawmakers heard from well-known researchers and school administrators during a meeting of the interim recently to discuss the impact of cell phones and social media on children.

One of the researchers suggested a policy that would ban cell phones during the entire school day. That policy is currently in place at Russell County High School and Russell County Middle School. Despite some initial negative feedback when the policy was first announced over the summer, Russell County school administrators have said the policy has been working well for students and teachers.

No decisions were made, but the topic is believed to be one that could be looked at when the lawmakers convene for the legislative session in January.
