The deadline for applications for Kentucky’s new medical cannabis program has passed, so where do things stand in Russell and surrounding counties with medical cannabis ordinances?
The fiscal court adopted an ordinance prohibiting medical cannabis within the county, but the City of Russell Springs approved an ordinance allowing it. As of now, the City of Jamestown has not passed an ordinance either way on the issue, although the council discussed the issue extensively at its last meeting.
Looking at neighboring counties, Adair, Pulaski, Wayne, Casey and Cumberland have all opted out, prohibiting medical cannabis operations within the county. Meanwhile, the Kentucky Office of Medical Cannabis lists Clinton County as opting-in to permit medical cannabis operations.
The state office also lists the city of Burnside as opting-in to allow medical cannabis operations.
The issue will be placed on the ballot for voters in the City of Monticello and the City of Burkesville. The question will also be on the ballot for voters in Monroe and Metcalfe counties.
Kentucky’s medical cannabis law goes into effect January 1.
