More details released about fatal shooting in Montpelier community

More details are being released about a fatal shooting in the Montpelier community of Adair County near the Russell County line.

According to a report in the Adair County Community Voice, Joseph South, who is facing a murder charge along with wanton endangerment charges in the shooting death of Earl Coffey, was in court for an arraignment hearing earlier this week.

According to the report, South fired more than 30 shots into Coffey’s residence on the morning of March 23, striking Coffey twice.

State Police say South was in the process of being evicted from a residence that he rented from Coffey when the shooting occurred.

KSP Detective Dexter Colvin also said during the hearing that Coffey’s wife, son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren were also in the house at the time of the shooting, leading to the wanton endangerment charges.

South is being held in the Adair County Regional Jail on a $1 million cash bond.
