Lady Lakers, Laker Boys Both Lose at Pickett County, TN

The Russell County Lady Lakers and Laker boys both went on the road Friday night to Byrdstown, Tennessee for the first girl-boy doubleheader of the season against Pickett County High School.

In the girls game, the Lady Bobcats had an easy time rolling to a 83.45 win over the Lady Lakers.    Picket County led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter, but outscored Russell County 23-11 in the second quarter to take a 39-25 halftime lead, and it never got any closer in the second half as the Lady Bobcats outscored the Lady Lakers 23-8 and 21-8 in the third and fourth qarters to coast to the victory, 84-45.

The Lady Lakers, now 1-3 on the season, saw Rachel Bolin lead the way with 14 points, while 8th grader Addy Abrell finished with 11 points off the bench.

In the boys game, it was close throughout but Pickett County pulled out the victory, 52-44.   The Bobcats  led 14-9 at end of the first quarter and at halftime 27-24.    Three Russell County starters, Owen Loy, Braydon Cerrato, and Maddox Shearer all had foul trouble in the first half and saw reduced minutes on the floor.   Pickett County increased their lead to 9 at the end of the third, but the Laker fought back in the fourth quarter, with game tied at one point and close most of the quarter before Pickett County hit their foul shots as three Lakers fouled out.

Mayes Gosser had 12, Shearer with 11, and Cerrato with 10 points for the Lakers, who fall to 2-1 on the season.

Both Lady Lakers and Lakers will be back in action on Tuesday night for their first district games as they travel to Edmonton for a girl-boy doubleheader with Metcalfe County.    Girls game tips off at 6 o’clock, boys to follow.   If you cannot attend, join Jeff Hoover for all the play by play action, with pregame beginning around 5:45 Tuesday evening on Laker Country 104.9 WJRS.
