New football districts finalized; two year plan approved

The KHSAA Board of Control approved the new football district realignment plan Wednesday afternoon.

The realignment plan would bring significant changes for Russell County Football.

Under the new plan, Russell County will move to District 7 in 4A where they will be joined by three-time defending 4A champion Boyle County, Lincoln County, Wayne County, and Taylor County, which is moving up from playing in Class 3A since 2019.

Russell County will be the lone team in the Central Time Zone in the newly-created district.

Previously, Russell County played in a district that included Warren East, Warren Central, Franklin-Simpson and Allen County-Scottsville.

But another change was also improved by the board of control on Wednesday.

Due to what is believed to be skewed enrollment numbers for schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this alignment will be in effect for only two years instead of the typical four-year plan.

The board of control will approve another alignment plan in 2025.

Here’s how the rest of Class 4A will be aligned.

District One – Allen County-Scottsville, Calloway County, Hopkinsville, Logan County, Paducah Tilghman, Warren East

District Two – Bardstown, Breckinridge County, John Hardin, Nelson County, Thomas Nelson
