Countywide deer harvest surpasses last year’s total

With the 2022-23 whitetail deer season coming to a close earlier this week, total harvest results from this past season have been released by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.

In Russell County, hunters took a total of 457 deer with 367 of those being male while 90 were female. Of that number, 309 were taken with a modern firearm, 50 were taken with archery, 65 with a crossbow and 33 by muzzleloader. In 2021-22, 367 deer were harvested in Russell County.

The neighboring counties of Pulaski saw 2,214 deer harvested, Adair 1,598, Casey County 1,281, Wayne 1,105, Cumberland 982 and Clinton with 466. All of these totals surpassed numbers from one year ago.

Statewide, 144,501 deer were taken during the ’22-’23 season, up from 132,328 deer taken last season.
