Russell County lagging behind most other surrounding counties in deer harvests

With modern gun season for whitetail deer season now over, preliminary harvest results from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife over the 16-day season show Russell County hunters took more than 300 deer during this timeframe.

Locally, hunters harvested a total of 303 deer, including those that were taken during the youth only gun season earlier this fall.

During gun season, the neighboring counties of Pulaski saw 1,450 deer harvested, Adair 1,122, Casey County 973, Wayne 710, Cumberland County 642 and Clinton with 254. Final gun season numbers may increase since results entered late Sunday may not show up for 24 hours.

The late muzzleloader season runs from December 10th through the 18th while archery season wraps up on January 16th, 2023.
