Lake Cumberland area now in a ‘moderate drought’

The U.S. Drought Index has been updated and the data released Thursday shows all of Russell County and surrounding Lake Cumberland area as being in a moderate drought.

The data was tabulated on Tuesday and did not take into account Wednesday’s rainfall, however officials say more rain is needed to alleviate the current drought conditions.

A portion of severe drought is now showing up in far western Kentucky while areas east of neighboring Pulaski County are still labeled at abnormally dry or not currently seeing drought conditions.
