School board approves $26 million+ working budget for FY 23

The Russell County Board of Education approved the Fiscal Year 23 budget at Monday night’s regular monthly meeting of school leaders. Superintendent Michael Ford discussed the budget and other action taken at the meeting with WJRS NEWS…

During a public comment period shortly after the school board meeting began, local attorney Joel Smith, who was representing a family with a student enrolled at the high school, came before the board to ask that they reconsider, or lessen, the severity of a disciplinary action taken against the student, a senior at the high school, by the high school’s principal regarding a recent incident on school grounds.

After hearing from Smith, the board voted 4-1 to table the issue until it can be discussed during an upcoming special-called meeting. Board member Joy Wilson was the lone “no” vote on the issue.
