Albany inmate back in custody after more than a month on the run

An inmate from the Wayne County Jail, who had escaped from custody through a chain link fence in the recreation yard back on March 25th, was picked up by the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday evening, according to reports.

Joseph Payton of Albany was found to be missing shortly after 8 p.m. on March 27th following an emergency head count and had been on the run since escaping on March 25th.

Jail employees had undergone 16 hours of training and all employees involved received a write-up for the incident, according to Wayne County Jailer Ronnie Ellis.

Payton is a Class C inmate and was housed on the minimum security side of the jail, and also worked in the kitchen, at the time of his March escape. He is now, once again, being lodged in the Wayne County Jail.
