Laker Baseball, Softball get wins at Metcalfe

The Russell County High School Baseball and Softball teams picked up wins in district play at Metcalfe County Tuesday night.

The Laker Baseball team won both games of a varsity doubleheader over the Hornets, taking the first game 16-1 with Evan Hammond getting the win on the mound, and winning the second game 13-6 with Ayden McGowan getting the win.

In the first game, Trace Stringer had a big day, going 4-4 at the plate with 4 RBI. Nathan Lawson drove in 3 runs, and Issac Roy and Bryce Cowell each drove in a pair of runs. Hammond pitched five innings, giving up just four hits and one run while walking 3 and striking out 8.

In the second game, McGowan pitched 3 innings, giving up 3 hits and 3 runs, while striking out six. Hammond drove in 3 runs in that game, while Cowell and Mayes Gosser each drove in 2.

With the wins, the Lakers are now 16-4 and 3-1 in district play. The Lakers go on the road Thursday for a district matchup with Cumberland County.

On the softball side, the Lady Lakers picked up a 6-2 win over the Lady Hornets. With the win, the Lady Lakers are now 5-0 in district play and 15-7 overall.

Payton Kinnett and Sophie Shearer each drove in a pair of runs for the Lady Lakers and Caroline Wells finished with 1 RBI.

Tarry Reynolds went the distance, pitching 7 innings and giving up 9 hits but just two runs (only one earned) and striking out 7.

The Lady Lakers will host Cumberland County for Senior Night at the Kay Morris Softball Complex on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
