Bill that bans transgender girls from participating in girls’ sports sent to governor

A bill to ban transgender girls from girls’ athletics in Kentucky is heading to Governor Andy Beshear following final passage in the Senate on Thursday by a vote of 26-9.

The bill, known as Senate Bill 83, had already passed the House of Representatives. The piece of legislation was passed earlier this month but was then amended to extend the law from 6th grade through college rather than 6th to 12th grade.

Those that back the bill, such as The Family Foundation, say it protects sports played by females by ensuring they have a legitimate chance to succeed while the American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky, the Human Rights Campaign, and the Fairness Campaign said it isn’t necessary, violates Title IX and jeopardizes the mental health of students.
