Mill Springs looking to add land as part of National Park System

Dawn Davis, the first permanent superintendent of the Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument in nearby Nancy, spoke to a group of business leaders in neighboring Pulaski County on Tuesday, telling them that the national park is looking add to the current 18 acres that make up the park — between 20 and 30 more tracts of land, about 900 acres total, that would be transferred from the Mill Springs Battlefield Association and the American Battlefield Trust.

That includes additional land in neighboring Wayne County, such as the Beech Grove Confederate encampment, and the Brown-Lanier House, according to a report in the Commonwealth Journal in Somerset. There is no timeframe for the land transferal.

Currently, there are six temporary employees at the park facility as well as a community volunteer ambassador who focuses on outreach, education, and developing a volunteer program, which Davis hopes to have operational next fall.
