Lakers defeat Warren Central in Homecoming Game

The Russell County Lakers won their home opener in Friday night’s Homecoming game against Warren Central by a score of 49-26.

The Lakers picked up their first district win of the season, while moving to 2-4 in the 2021 campaign.

The Lakers dominated on the ground, rushing 44 times for 294 yards and six touchdowns.

Quarterback Gavin Gossage ran for three touchdowns and 65 yards. Braxton Walters led the team with 115 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Tony Noyola rushed for 70 yards and one touchdown. Gage Hicks also had one carry for 44 yards.

Gossage completed 6 of 12 passes for 84 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

That touchdown went to Andrew Shanks, who had two catches for 67 yards on the night. Blake Bolin and Braxton Walters finished with one reception each.

Walters led the defense with 10 total tackles (two for loss), followed by Noyola with six and Trevor Rankins with five.

Braxton Smith led the team with three tackles for loss.

Noyola also had an interception.

Yarley Medrano connected on all seven point-after attempts.

The Lakers will be back at home on Friday in district play, as they host the Franklin-Simpson Wildcats, who come in at 1-5 and a district loss to Allen County-Scottsville last Friday.
