The Russell County Lakers won both games of a double-header Saturday afternoon, knocking off LaRue County 5-2 and defeating South Warren 9-7.
Russell County 5 – LaRue County 2
Against LaRue County in the opening game of the day, Evan Hammond picked up the win on the mound, pitching 4 1/3 innings and giving up two runs on three hits and striking out six.
The Lakers fell behind 2-0 early, but held the Hawks scoreless for the remainder of the game, taking the lead for good during a four-run fourth inning.
CJ Vonfumetti and Gavin Gossage led the way for the Lakers offense, driving in two runs each. Nathan Lawson drove in a run as well.
Noah Hadley entered the game in relief, pitching 2 2/3 innings without giving up a hit or a run, and striking out two.
Russell County 9 – South Warren 7
In the second game of the day, The Lakers withstood a South Warren rally to pick up a 9-7 victory in 4th Region competition.
The Lakers built up an early 7-0 lead after two innings on the Spartans, who defeated the Lakers 10-7 at South Warren back on May 6. However, the Spartans rallied with three runs in the third and three more in the sixth to come within striking distance.
Vonfumetti again played a key role at the plate, hitting a two-run homerun in the third inning. Bryce Cowell drove in two runs for the Lakers, and Aiden Antle and Maxon Gosser drove in one each.
Antle got the starting nod for the Lakers, pitching 3 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on 11 hits and striking out one. Camden Carpenter entered the game in relief, pitching two innings and giving up three runs on three hits. Hadley closed out the game, pitching 1 1/3 innings, giving up no runs and just one hit while striking out one.
With the victories, the Lakers improve to 20-5 on the season and move to 10-2 in region play.
The Lakers host Casey County on Monday, which will be Senior Night for the Laker Baseball program.
