Womack to continue bowling career at LWC

Jason Womack, surrounded by his family, signs to bowl at Lindsey Wilson College during a ceremony at RCHS Thursday.

Russell County High School senior bowler Jason Womack plans to continue his bowling career at the next level as he signed to join the Lindsey Wilson College Bowling team in Columbia on Thursday afternoon.

Joined by his family in the foyer at Russell County High School Thursday afternoon, Womack signed to play for Derek Lyons at LWC.

“Jason has excelled in his time as a bowler at Russell County High School,” RCHS Bowling Coach Brad Rexroat said. “He’s a fine young man and I’m looking forward to see what he does in college and beyond.”

Womack said he wanted to stay close to home to continue his bowling career and he was familiar with several of the current members of the LWC Bowling team, which ultimately led to his decision.

“I think it’ll be a lot of fun,” Womack said. “Derek seems like a good coach and I’m familiar with basically everyone on the team, so it should be a fun experience. Being close to home was something else that drew me to Lindsey Wilson.”

Jason is the son of Joe and Tanya Womack.

Tanya said she’s excited to see her son go on to play at the collegiate level and the signing was a fulfillment of a long-time goal he’s held. Tanya said Jason initially became interested in LWC in part because of former coach Brandon Burns, who unexpectedly passed away in June 2018.

However, she said he is very excited to begin his collegiate career close to home.

“This has been his goal since he was a freshman, to sign with Lindsey,” Tanya said. “He wanted to bowl for Brandon. Sadly, he didn’t get that opportunity, but now he gets to bowl with Derek and we’re just really excited to see how he grows.”
