Market value of Russell County ag products nearly $55M in 2022

Recently released data from the 2022 Kentucky Agriculture Census shows a significant increase in the market value of local agriculture products, with the market value of ag products sold from Russell County coming in at just under $55 million.

That’s a 46 percent increase from 2017, the last time the ag census was taken.

The report shows a 5 percent decrease in the number of farms in Russell County from 2017 to 2022, but the average size of farms locally rose by about 13 percent. The report shows 639 farms in Russell County, with an average size of 155 acres.

The report, which comes from the USDA, also shows an average net cash farm income in Russell County of more than $23,000 per farm in 2022, a 183 percent increase from 2017.

According to the report, the majority of farms in Russell County come in at 10-49 acres, making up 40 percent of the farms locally.
