Kentucky farmers and truckers are getting temporary relief from high diesel fuel costs during the fall harvest.
Governor Andy Beshear has declared a state of emergency allowing untaxed, red-dyed diesel fuel to be used on public roadways beginning today.
Red-dyed diesel is normally used in off-road equipment, including tractors and combines, and is restricted from use on public highways because of its tax status.
The state action follows a request from Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell and an executive order from President Donald Trump easing federal restrictions and deferring applicable federal diesel taxes.
Shell calls the development welcome news for Kentucky farmers. He thanked President Trump, Attorney General Coleman and Governor Beshear for moving the relief forward.
According to the governor’s office, Kentucky’s order will remain in effect until the end of the war in Iran or the expiration of the president’s executive order on December 31st, whichever comes first.
