A news story which aired Wednesday on WJRS Local News has generated a response from parties and entities involved, and much discussion within the community.
WJRS reported that the Russell County Industrial Development Authority had rejected an offer from the Woodland Farm Foundation to purchase property for $10 million to construct a multi-sports complex. The information in the story was provided to WJRS NEWS by two local, elected officials, both of whom spoke with WJRS NEWS Tuesday afternoon following the IDA meeting.
The story prompted a response from Clint Voils, chairperson of the Russell County IDA. In his statement yesterday, Voils said the IDA had not received an offer to purchase any property owned by the Authority and therefore no such offer had been accepted or rejected by the authority. Voils did note that discussions concerning the sale of real property by a public agency are confidential and noted the discussion by the board on Tuesday was held in closed session.
Wednesday night, WJRS NEWS was contacted by John Adams, President of the Woodland Farm Foundation. In a statement provided to WJRS NEWS, Adams said his group presented a proposal to the IDA board to create a public/private partnership for the land. Adams said his group committed to a minimum investment or donation of $10 million over the next 10 years to “plan, develop, operate and maintain an athletic complex.” Adams said the proposal was for the IDA to donate the land and the Woodland Farm Foundation, thru the public/private partnership, would “oversee the planning process, develop the master plan, and select, engage, and manage the contractors necessary for the complex’s development and operation.”
Adams further stated “It was very disappointing that this proposal was turned down, as our vision was to create a vibrant, centrally located destination where kids can be introduced to sports at a young age and continue participating throughout their lives.”
