Jamestown’s annual Lakefest celebration once again brought thousands of visitors to downtown over the Independence Day weekend, but this year’s event also included special recognition for community leaders who have helped shape the city through the years.
During a special ceremony Saturday evening, Mayor Regina Hinton honored all six living former Jamestown mayors. Former Mayors Donnie Wilkerson, June McGaha, Brooks Bates and Nick Shearer were on hand to receive commemorative plaques, while former Mayors Dr. H.K. Popplewell and Terry Lawless were unable to attend.
Mayor Hinton also recognized Assistant City Clerk Debbie Perkins as a “Hometown Hero” for her 26 years of dedicated service. In addition to her responsibilities at City Hall, Perkins has coordinated Lakefest vendors for decades and will retire at the end of this year.
Mayor Hinton says it was important to recognize those who have made lasting contributions to the City of Jamestown.
Mayor Hinton says while Lakefest is a two-day celebration, planning for the event actually begins months in advance.
Lakefest featured live music, a children’s patriotic parade, fireworks, food vendors, family activities and thousands of visitors celebrating Independence Day in downtown Jamestown.
