The Russell County Sheriff’s Office is issuing a warning about a scam in which someone is posing as a sheriff’s deputy.
Russell County Sheriff Derek Polston said some local residents have received calls from an individual presenting themself as Sergeant David Butler with the Russell County Sheriff’s Office. The caller states that they have warrants on the resident and is requesting money to remove them.
The caller also has reportedly attempted to pose as Sheriff Polston on these calls.
Polston is advising residents that there is no David Butler that works with the sheriff’s office and the sheriff’s office does not conduct law enforcement business in this manner. Residents are advised to avoid providing any kind of personal or financial information over the phone to these scammers.
Polston said if the sheriff’s office needs to contact you, they will come to your residence or ask you to come to the courthouse to the sheriff’s office.

Polston said the sheriff’s office is investigating the source of the calls.
