Big crowd at zoning meeting opposed to change on Old Columbia Road

Around 50 people were in attendance at a meeting of the Russell Springs Planning and Zoning Commission last night.

The commission held a public hearing regarding a proposed zoning change at a residence at 115 Old Columbia Road, referred to as the Bottom homeplace.

The heirs to the Bottom estate were in attendance, with Brenda Holt stating she and the family have attempted to sell the property for a while with no luck, but some prospective buyers were interested if the property, which includes 8 acres, was rezoned to R-3 with it being likely a potential buyer would build apartments on the property.

Several adjacent and nearby property owners expressed opposition to the rezoning, citing fears of what it could open the door to and expressing concern about people moving in and moving out of the neighborhood.

By unofficial tally, 26 citizens spoke during the meeting with 23 of those expressing opposition.

The 45-minute public hearing concluded with a short break before the commission reconvened for its regular meeting, where the commission voted unanimously to reject the proposal.
