Casey County Schools Delay Start of School One Week Amid Water Supply Concerns

The Casey County Board of Education has approved a revision to the 2026-2027 school calendar as a proactive response to the ongoing water supply concerns affecting the community.

Under the revised calendar, the first day of school for students has been delayed by one week, moving from August 18 to August 24. School officials say all previously scheduled Open House events will remain on the calendar as planned.

District leaders say the change allows Casey County Schools to return to a variable calendar, similar to those used during the past two school years. The revised schedule preserves the state’s required instructional hours while providing flexibility to add time to the school day if water-related issues or severe weather result in school closures.

School officials say they remain encouraged by the partnership between Dr. Haddad, the City of Liberty, the Casey County Economic Development Authority, emergency management officials, state agencies, and others working to bring water from the Green River to Lake Liberty. The project is expected to strengthen the community’s long-term water supply.

While optimistic the effort will be successful, district leaders say planning ahead now will allow the school system to respond more effectively if conditions worsen, rather than reacting after disruptions occur.

Officials say the calendar revision is also intended to reduce the likelihood of extending the school year into June of 2027, while thanking students, families, employees and the Casey County community for their continued patience, understanding and support.
