A summer feeding program is off to a strong start after serving more than 14,000 meals to local children on its first pickup day of the season.
Program organizers report that 14,154 meals were distributed Wednesday, helping provide food assistance to thousands of children during the summer months.
Officials say they are overwhelmed by the community’s response and grateful for the opportunity to serve so many families. However, demand exceeded expectations, and some families were unable to receive meals during yesterday’s distribution.
Organizers apologized to those who missed out and say plans are already underway to increase meal preparation for next week’s pickup to better meet community needs.
The program, which is offered free of charge to children in the area, requires extensive planning and coordination. Staff and volunteers say Wednesday’s turnout demonstrates the significant need for the service and the importance of community support.
While some participants experienced delays during the first day of distribution, organizers thanked families for their patience and understanding. They expect operations to become more efficient in the coming weeks as staff, volunteers, and participants become more familiar with the process.
