New population data and long-range projections suggest Russell County could continue to see steady growth over the next several decades.
According to U.S. Census estimates, Russell County’s population has increased from 17,991 residents in 2020 to approximately 18,600 residents in 2025. That’s a gain of more than 600 people in just five years.
Looking ahead, demographic projections indicate the county’s population could reach between 20,000 and 21,000 residents by 2050. If those projections hold true, Russell County would see overall growth of roughly 11 to 17 percent over a 30-year period.
Population experts point to several factors contributing to the county’s growth, including the area’s quality of life, outdoor recreation opportunities around Lake Cumberland, and continued interest from retirees and families seeking rural communities.
The projections also show an aging population, with residents age 65 and older expected to make up a larger share of the county’s population in coming decades. That trend could increase demand for healthcare services, housing options, and workforce development initiatives.
Local leaders often use population forecasts to help guide planning decisions involving infrastructure, economic development, emergency services, and public facilities.
While future growth rates can change based on economic conditions and migration patterns, current estimates suggest Russell County is positioned for gradual and sustained population growth through mid-century.
