The latest data from the U.S. Drought Monitor shows Russell County, along with more than 40 percent of the state, being in extreme drought.
The drought monitor shows the Lake Cumberland area, along with areas to the west as bring in extreme drought. Another roughly 36 percent of the state is considered to be in severe drought.
The U.S. Drought Monitor data was released yesterday, but was collected on Tuesday before some much-needed rainfall entered the area.
Rainfall amounts have varied across the county. The local mesonet station in the Ono community recorded just one-tenth of an inch of rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday. Some areas around Russell Springs saw a little over half-an-inch of rainfall.
The National Weather Service in Louisville is forecasting rain chances over the next few days, which could provide some relief to drought conditions.
