Russell County Schools Superintendent Michael Ford said he is monitoring Senate Bill 181 in the state legislature.
The law passed last year required school districts to implement a traceable communication system for electronic communication between school personnel and students. However, the law caused confusion with its requirements and other concerns.
The state legislature is revisiting the law during this year’s session with adjustments to the language of the bill.
Ford said the school district is continuing to monitor the changes as it makes its way through the legislature.
This year’s version allows school districts more discretion on disciplining school personnel when the law is violated, as well as allowing provisions for communicating in a perceived emergency.
The bill was approved by the Kentucky Senate, but has not yet been voted on in the House.
