It’s been more than four years since the Russell County Circuit Clerk’s Office ceased issuing driver’s licenses as part of a statewide initiative to move licensing to regional offices.
Now, a bill filed this week in Frankfort would return driver’s license operations to circuit clerk offices across the state.
House Bill 162 has some early momentum, with 10 House Republicans signing on as co-sponsors.
The bill, however, does not make any mention of increasing staffing at circuit clerk offices, which has been a concern with bringing driver’s licensing back to those offices. That could, however, be addressed in a different bill.
If passed, the bill would go into effect on July 1, 2027.
