Salem Elementary earns yellow rating from state assessment

Salem Elementary received an overall yellow rating based on scores from last year’s state assessment.

A yellow rating is the middle rating of five color categories given by the state. Blue is the highest color rating, followed by green, yellow, orange, and red.

Salem Elementary earned a green rating in the combined reading and math indicator, but earned an orange rating for the science, social studies, and writing indicator.

Salem Elementary students outpaced state average for the number of students scoring proficient or distinguished in reading, math, and combined writing. In reading, 51 percent scored proficient or distinguished compared to the 49 percent state average. In math, 48 percent of Salem students scored proficient or distinguished – 5 percent higher than state average. In combined writing, 44 percent of Salem students scored proficient or distinguished – 1 percent higher than state average.

In science, 37 percent of students scored proficient or distinguished. That was equal to state average.

In social studies, 33 percent scored proficient or distinguished – 5 percent lower than state average.
