The Jamestown City Council approved an ordinance last night that will permit special-purpose vehicles, like side-by-sides and some other ATVs, to be operated on city streets.
The vehicles must meet state requirements for equipment, be inspected by the sheriff’s office, licensed by the county clerk’s office, and insured.
The ordinance mirrors the one passed by the county. If the Russell Springs City Council approves the ordinance at its next meeting, the laws regarding special-purpose vehicles will be the same across the county and both cities.
The council passed the ordinance by a 5-1 vote. Councilman Barry Coffey voted in opposition to the ordinance. Coffey expressed concerns about safety and said more city residents he spoke to were opposed to the ordinance than were in favor of it.
The council also discussed a couple upcoming events in the city. The city will host a free movie night tonight at Beck Park and the annual Trunk or Treat on the square on Halloween.
