Russell County Search and Rescue was called out yesterday to assist after a boat began taking on water after getting too close to Wolf Creek Dam.
Search and Rescue officials say the incident occurred at around 10 yesterday morning as two men were fishing on a boat on the river side below the dam. The boat drifted too close to the dam, and were being pulled toward the turbulent discharge area.
Officials say the boat was taking on water and didn’t have the power to overcome the current.
Russell County Search and Rescue Commander Chris Money said volunteers were called out and were able to assist the boaters after the Army Corps of Engineers shut off the water at the dam.
This is the second water rescue reported near the dam in the last five days. Money spoke to WJRS News about the dangers of boating near the dam when water is being discharged.
Officials urge boaters to remain at least 500 feet away from the dam.
