The Jamestown City Council is continuing to gather information before deciding whether to permit special vehicles, like qualified side-by-sides, to be operated on city streets.
Senate Bill 63 went into effect last month, and now local government entities must decide whether to permit these vehicles to be operated on public roadways.
At last night’s Jamestown City Council meeting, the council didn’t take any action toward the issue, but continued discussions on the topic.
Jamestown Mayor Regena Hinton said she and the council members are continuing to gather information on the new law before voting on an ordinance.
Jamestown Police Chief Jeff Kerns said city police officers have already encountered some individuals driving side-by-sides on city streets despite the city not yet making it legal to operate them on city streets.
The law requires side-by-sides and other special vehicles to meet certain qualifications. The vehicles must pass inspection by the sheriff’s office, be licensed by the clerk’s office, and be insured.
The fiscal court will hold a first reading on an ordinance to permit side-by-sides and other special vehicles on county roadways at its meeting next month.
