Russell County continues to be in contention for a major grant from the Environmental Protection Agency.
The fiscal court recently applied for a grant that would provide seed funding to launch a comprehensive recycling program in the county. If Russell County were to receive the grant, local students would help design and build recycling bins and trailers.
Russell County is competing against 8 other states in the region for this opportunity.
The application has advanced to the Merit Review stage, with final decisions expected this winter.
