Concern over the location of drug treatment facilities and clinics has prompted the Russell Springs Planning and Zoning Committee to request the Russell Springs City Council take immediate and decisive action.
In a special called meeting this morning, the Planning and Zoning Committee recommends the Russell Springs Council take immediate action to “protect the integrity of our neighborhoods and the safety of our families.” The Planning and Zoning Committee is recommending the city council adopt zoning restrictions regarding the location of suboxone or drug treatment clinics or facilities and establishing a minimum distance of those facilities from churches, schools, daycares, and public playgrounds.
Lou Ann Flanagan, chairperson of the zoning board, stated she urged the council to “adopt a firm cap on the number of these clinics within city boundaries.” Flanagan went on to say, “we cannot afford to wait until we are overwhelmed with facilities that are placed without regard to the long term effects on our town. I respectfully call on the council to act now…” The resolution was adopted unanimously by the Planning and Zoning Committee and now must be considered by the mayor and city council.
