Friday night’s football action went late into the night, as the Russell County – Somerset game at Finley Field at First National Bank Athletic Complex came with a two-hour delay shortly after the game started, with the Lakers falling in overtime to the visiting Briar Jumpers by a score of 13-7.
After returning from the two-hour delay, the Lakers scored on a rushing touchdown by senior Trystan Bennett. The Jumpers tied the score at 7-7, with both defenses coming up with big stops in the second half as the teams went into overtime still knotted at 7.
The Jumpers scored first in overtime, converting a 4th and goal from the 2-yard line. The Jumpers missed the extra point to follow, making the score 13-7.
The Lakers were able to get the ball to the 1-yard line, but the officials ruled Owen Loy short of the goal line on the quarterback sneak, ending the game.
The Lakers fall to 0-2 on the season, and will host South Laurel this Friday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30.
