The Adair Fiscal Court approved a pay increase for sheriff’s deputies nearly a month after Sheriff Josh Brockman made an impassioned plea to magistrates after multiple deputies left to go to other area departments for more money.
The day after that meeting last month, Brockman announced his retirement, which will be effective Oct. 1.
The proposal approved by the court this week includes pay raises for deputies, as well as leaving the county’s occupational tax at 0.5 percent.
Under the approved plan, deputies with 10 years or more of experience would receive a $5/hour raise. New hires who haven’t been to the academy will start at $18.50/hour, which would increase to $20 after training. The plan also includes raises at certain service milestones, including at 3, 5, 10, 15, and 20 years.
