Vote to change meeting time of fiscal court falls again

A vote to support changing the time of the monthly Russell County Fiscal Court meeting fell short for the second time in as many months last week.

Magistrate Mickey Garner brought forth another motion matching the one presented last month to change the fiscal court meeting time back to 5:30 p.m. This time, the motion failed by a 2-3 vote.

Garner and Magistrate Steve Richardson voted in favor of moving the time, while Magistrates Terry Waddell, Zach Wilson, and Judge Executive Randy Marcum voted to keep the meeting time at 10 a.m.

At the beginning of the year, the court unanimously approved a change to move the meeting time to 10 a.m. However, over the last two months, Garner has expressed that he does not like the new time and said it’s an inconvenience for the magistrates.

Ultimately, state law says the county judge executive holds the power of setting meeting dates for the fiscal court.
