Senior Trace Stringer came through in the clutch yesterday, delivering a bases loaded hit with two outs in the bottom of the 7th to score the winning run and send the Lakers to the region semifinals.
The Lakers defeated Logan County 7-6, as Stringer’s clutch hit scored the winning run to send the Lakers to today’s region semifinal.
The Lakers fell behind 3-0 in the top of the 1st, but scored 3 in the bottom half to even the scoreboard.
The Cougars retook the lead in the 2nd, going up 4-3, and held the lead until the bottom of the 6th when a Mayes Gosser double tied the game at 6-6.
After tying the game, Russell County’s Lincoln Helm was able to force 3 consecutive outs in the top of the 7th to give Russell County the chance to win in the bottom of the 7th.
Gosser led the team with 3 hits and 2 runs batted in, while Ayden McGowan finished with 2 hits and 2 runs batted in, and Stringer finished with a pair of hits and an RBI. Jack Shearer also drove in a run for the Lakers.
It was a combined effort on the mound for the Lakers. Stringer got the start, pitching 1 1/3 innings and giving up 4 runs on 4 hits. Owen Loy entered in relief, pitching 4 innings and giving up 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits and striking out 2. Lincoln Helm entered in the 6th inning, pitching 1 2/3 innings, giving up just one hit.
The Lakers will take on 14th District Champion Greenwood in the region semifinals this evening, which gets underway at 5:30 at Nick Denes Field at Western Kentucky University. We’ll have coverage of the game live on Laker Country 104.9, beginning about 15 minutes prior to first pitch.
