Laker Baseball picks up pair of wins in Saturday doubleheader

The Laker Baseball team picked up a pair of wins in a Saturday doubleheader at David Rexroat Field.

In the first game of the day, the Lakers defeated the Garrard County Lions, who sat atop the 12th region and entered Saturday’s matchup on a 12-game winning streak.

The Lakers came out on top 4-3 by way of an Owen Loy walk-off single in the 8th inning, which scored Ayden McGowan from second.

The Lakers trailed 3-0 after 5 innings, but scored 2 runs in the 6th and another in the 7th to send the game to extra innings. After holding the Lions scoreless in the top half of the 8th, McGowan led the bottom half off with a walk, then Jack Shearer laid down a sacrifice bunt to move McGowan to second, and Loy’s single to right field drove McGowan in to score and win the game.

Loy, Trace Stringer, Mayes Gosser, Walker Stephens, and Ben Kemp each finished with a hit on the day. Stringer, McGowan, Shearer, and Loy each drove in a run for the Lakers.

Loy picked up the win pitching, going 6 1/3 innings and giving up just one run on 3 hits and striking out five batters.

In the second game, the Lakers picked up an 8-7 win over George Rogers Clark.

In that one, the Lakers jumped out to an early lead, holding a 7-1 advantage after 3 innings, but GRC chipped away at the lead and trimmed it to 8-7 going into the final frame, but the Lakers were able to hold on for the victory.

Loy and Stringer each finished with a pair of hits in the game, and Stringer and Gosser each drove in a pair of runs.

Lincoln Helm got the start for the Lakers, with Adam Walters and Ayden McGowan pitching for the Lakers as well. Together, they combined to give up 7 runs on 10 hits while striking out 5.

The Lakers will look to keep the momentum rolling on Tuesday when they host district rival Metcalfe County.
