Suspect in CU murder makes first court appearance

The man accused of murdering a Campbellsville University student in his dorm room over the weekend made his first court appearance yesterday.

21-year-old Charles “Zeke” Escalera made his first appearance in Taylor District Court yesterday, where the judge set his bail at $2 million cash.

Escalera is accused of murdering 18-year-old Josiah Kilman early Saturday morning in Kilman’s dorm room. The two were on the wrestling team at Campbellsville University.

Police say Kilman was found unresponsive in his dorm room just after midnight and was taken to the hospital, where he passed away.

The cause of the death has been ruled manual strangulation by the Taylor County Coroner’s Office and police say they are still searching for a motive.

Escalera also faces a charge of burglary for allegedly breaking into a house in Green County while he evaded law enforcement.
