Lakers see season come to an end with loss to Metcalfe in district tournament

The Russell County Laker Basketball team saw its season come to an end last night, falling in the district tournament to the Metcalfe County Hornets.

The Lakers entered last night’s game as the 1 seed in the 16th District Tournament with the Hornets entering as the 4 seed.

The Hornets led throughout, jumping out to an early 10-0 lead to start the game. The Lakers would trim the lead to 14-10 going into the second quarter, but the Hornets came out strong in the second frame, taking a 33-19 lead into halftime.

The Lakers started the second half strong, and were able to trim the Hornets lead to seven points during the third quarter, but the Hornets led by 11 going into the 4th quarter and were able to build their lead in the final eight minutes to come away with 69-52 victory against the hosting Lakers.

It was a tough way to end the season for the Lakers and coach Brandon Cooper, who wraps up his first season at the helm of the Laker program with a final record of 12-16.

In the second game last night, the 3 seed Cumberland County Panthers defeated the 2 seed Clinton County Bulldogs by a score of 67-59.

The Hornets and the Panthers will play Friday night at 7 p.m. at Russell County High School for the district championship.
