Lady Lakers defeat Monroe County, earn spot in Thursday’s district championship

The Russell County Lady Lakers survived a back-and-forth game with Monroe County last night, winning 53-51 to advance in the 16th District Tournament.

The game was back-and-forth throughout, with the Lady Falcons hitting a shot just before the buzzer to take a 27-26 lead into halftime.

The Lady Falcons extended the lead to 4 at the end of the third quarter and led by 8 with about six minutes remaining in the game, but the Lady Lakers battled back and Addy Abrell hit a layup with about 50 seconds left that gave the Lakers the lead.

Aniyah Coffey came up with a steal on Monroe County’s final possession and secure the victory for the Lady Lakers.

With the win, the Lady Lakers will play for a district championship for the first time since 2021.

The win also clinches a spot for Russell County in the 4th Region Tournament.

The Lady Lakers will take on Metcalfe County in the 16th District Championship Thursday night at Russell County High School.

The Lady Hornets won both regular season meetings over the Lady Lakers.

Metcalfe County has won the last three district tournaments.
